We climbed through a thin layer of mist as we headed south toward the Channel, and I had time to think about this amazing situation I had created for myself. I knew I was as ready for combat as I could be, but I still felt the dread of the unknown.

Besides, coming from a family of recent immigrants, my orientation was more toward Europe. I felt strongly about what the Nazis had done to Poland. I had read about the Battle of Britain, and especially about the great job done by the Polish flyers of 303 Squadron. By now they were seasoned veterans with a lot of experience that would be useful to the American fighter pilots who would soon begin arriving in England. The idea jelled: I was a fighter pilot, and I could speak Polish.
